Notoginseng

Notoginseng (Panax notoginseng) belongs to the same scientific genus as North American ginseng and Asian ginseng. Notoginseng root has been used in Chinese medicine for thousands of years as a general tonic to strengthen the immune system. It is highly prized in China for its therapeutic effects in treating, for example, cardiovascular diseases, inflammation, body pains, trauma, and internal and external bleeding due to injury [1].

The major active constituents of Notoginseng are similar with North American ginseng and Asian ginsengs, that are dammarane-type ginsenosides, includes two classifications: 20S– protopanaxadiol compounds and 20S-protopanaxatriol compounds. But it contains a higher amount of Rg1ginsenoside and no detectable amount of Rf [2]. Meanwhile, R1 can be used to identify Notogisneng [3].

As a traditional valuable herb with huge demand, there are many Notoginseng adulterants in the market. Canphy® Notoginseng P.E. has been strictly controlled in every batch with 10% notoginseng saponins. That means high quality P.E. coming from pure species and innovative process with the characteristic and stable HPLC profile. After CPC research team’s years of intensive studies on different ginseng species, we have developed a reliable RRLC method using the Zorbax Eclipse XDB column to complete the Notoginseng analysis by RRLC in only four minutes [3].
